The role of the Parent Support Provider has become a viable professional position in the children’s mental health and wellness workforce. There is a significant need to create state and national standards of practice for this emerging cadre of mental health workers. Through the merging of lived experience and cutting-edge practice, Parent Support Providers can become the compass that families rely upon to navigate the complex array of children’s mental health services and supports. Certification uses a formal process to identify and acknowledge individuals who have met a recognized standard. Usually this standard includes education, experience, and an exam of knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the job. When an individual meets the standard, he or she receives certification from a certifying agency. This webinar, co-sponsored by the National Federation of Families and the Family Run Executive Director Leadership Association (FREDLA), provides an overview of the Federation of Families national certification of parent support providers, as well as a look at how different states are approaching the issue of peer support certification Participants will learn:

1. What Parent Support Providers do to improve outcomes for children and the systems that serve them;

2. The process and eligibility criteria for national certification;

3. Models for state certification;

4. The core competencies of Parent Support Providers. This training was provided as a collaboration by FREDLA and the National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health as partners in the TA Network. The TA Network provides technical assistance to the Child, Adolescent and Family Branch of SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services and to grantees of the Children’s Mental Health Initiative across the nation to support states and communities to expand and sustain their systems of care for children, youth, young adults and their families.
